Kong NayI co-edited this piece with Vincent Moon. Take Away Show #111 _ KONG NAY from La Blogotheque on Vimeo. 09/23/10 Vincent is one of my favorite filmmakers. His Take Away Shows are thrilling, intimate connections of music and locale with the moving image. His camera is a reflection of his lifestyle: always moving, traveling, seeking and finding beauty in music and street cultures in every part of the world. This piece on Kong Nay - the "Ray Charles of Cambodia"/master of the traditional Cambodian instrument called chapei - was shot in Phnom Penh. Vincent and I collaborated on the edit via ftp and email; I did my cuts in Los Angeles and he did his in Paris and Cairo. This kind of global collaboration is probably not so special in 2010, but it was new to me, and the ease of it reminded me that the internet is pretty amazing (a fact I usually take for granted). We could've done this in the last century (yes, that old-fashioned 20th century), but it would've taken a lot more time, planning, and expense; it would've been a pain. So here's to the internet. Let's hope its advancement expands and deepens the amazing global cross-pollination it's already fostering, and it doesn't become a monster that devours us all. Probably it will do both.
